Air India serves as the Republic of India’s national flag carrier. The company is a joint ownership between the Indian government and Air India Limited (AIL), and it operates a fleet of 89 Airbus and Boeing aircraft, with 27 Dreamliners currently on order.
Air India launched its air services in October 1932, and currently flies to 49 domestic destinations and 26 international destinations in Asia, Europe and North America from several hubs. Its primary hub is at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, and it has secondary hubs at the Chennai International Airport and the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. Plans to establish an international base at Dubai International Airport is currently underway.The flag carrier holds the distinction of being the world’s first all-jet airline, an honor it achieved in 1962, and it is the world’s largest operator of Airbus A310-300. It has captured the country’s third largest market share in the domestic air travel industry, and had previously merged with Indian Airlines in 2007, which resulted in a decline in its domestic market share.
Air India, which operates under the slogan “Your Palace in the Sky,” offers passengers three classes of service: First Class, Executive Class, and Economy. First class seating is available on most of their Boeing flights, Executive Class is offered on Boeing and Airbus planes, and Economy Class passengers enjoy the carrier’s Airbus and ATR aircraft.
Air India’s short haul flights comprise of domestic city destinations in Southeast Asia and Southwest Asia. Long haul flights encompass the airline’s routes East Asia, Europe and North America. It lists among its subsidiary companies a freight operations division, Air India Cargo, a low cost airline, Air India Express, and a regional budget carrier, Air India Regional.
Air India has been the recipient of several industry awards, including Awaz Consumer Awards’ Preferred International Airline for Travel and Hospitality (2006); three successive Best International West Bound Airline out of India awards from the Galileo Express Travel World; Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative and Best Short Haul International Airline (2008) from the same award body; The Mercury Award (1994 and 2003) for best in-flight catering services from the International Flight Catering Association; the Amity Corporate Excellence Award; Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Award; Best South Asian Airline, and Cargo Airline of the Year Award.
