Barapani Airport SHL

The Barapani airport, also known as the Shilong or Umroi airport, is the domestic airport of Shillong, which is the capital city of the state of Meghalaya in India. This airport is located at a distance of 32 kilometres from the main city. The Barapani airport is used both for military and public flights, as it is also an air force base. This airport facilitates the city of Shillong and some other nearby cities.

The Barapani airport is spread over an area of 192 acres. It only has one domestic terminal so the airport does not accommodate any international air traffic. The domestic terminal has an average capacity of 50 passengers. The major airline company using this airport is Air India, which has both passenger, and cargo flights. Air India has regular flights to the cities of Jorhat and Kolkatta from the Barapani Airport.

The Airport Authority of India has recently planned an expansion of the Barapani airport in order to accommodate more passengers and carriers. A new terminal is expected to be constructed, which will increase the passenger capacity to almost a 100.

Public Transport And Car Hire

Most passengers use taxis to travel to Barapani Airport. There is also a city bus service, which provides transport to the airport from the main city. It takes almost 30 minutes to travel to the airport by bus or taxi.

There are no prepaid taxi counters at the airport, which can be an inconvenience for travellers. However, you can find general taxis at the airport.

There are some local as well as international car rental companies such as Hentz and Avis, which provide services from the Barapani Airport.

Facilities

It is a small airport with only one domestic terminal, so it has only a few basic facilities. There is a snack bar, coffee bar, a small bookstall, wheel chair facilities with assistance, and childcare.
