Madurai Airport IXM
Madurai is the oldest inhabited city of India. 13 km away from the centre of Madurai town is located the Madurai Airport. This airport was established in 1957. The reason why this airport is important is because it is one of the vital links via which people come and go from the Tamil Nadu State to the four famous cities of India such as Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi.
Currently four airlines are operating at this airport domestically: the Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, and Kingfisher airlines. All of these four airlines are performing regular flight operations for the four cities mentioned-above.
Recently, measures have been taken to upgrade the airport. A funding of Rupees 160 Crore has been allocated for upgrading the airport; moreover, it has been divided into two phases: The Phase I of the project is currently in progress. According to this phase, the runway will be extended to 400 metres in order to make it about 2,286 metres. The phase II of the development constitutes the construction of the new terminal building. The construction involved in the phase II is almost complete, with the new terminal details at the very end of this process.
Although this is a domestic airport, it offers excellent facilities for the passengers. Some of these include free Wi-Fi access within the premises of the airport, separate shopping centres, gift shops, and renowned restaurants, which include Napa Valley Wine Bar, Brooklyn Brew Pub, and Euro Café. The list extends to Eurasia Coffee house, Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger King, Great American Bagel, Café Ritazza, Cucina Express, Dunkin Donuts, International Food Hall, Sammy’s BBQ, New York Sports Grill, Deli & Soups, and many others. You can even find Duty Free Stores located at Madurai Airport, along with foreign exchange desks and ATMs.
For passengers, the airport also offers exquisite lounges. A person can relax and take a few moments of seclusion from the busy schedule and enjoy resting on the luxurious sofas in the passenger lounges.
There are varieties of hotels near the airport. GRT Regency Hotel, which is 10 km away from the airport, is one of the examples. Moreover, you can find Kodaikanal, a place 120 km away from the airport, which is considered an extremely famous tourist spot. It has a tempting view of greenery all around, with a lake, and a waterfall.
The latest development in Madurai airport has been the formation of a new terminal. It has already started functioning gradually (in September 2010), but the Home Minister showed the prospects of the new terminal, converting the airport into an international one after 3 to 4 months. It is now hoped that multiple airlines agree on granting international status to the airport.
