History and the structure of the airport
The grounds for the inception of the airport were laid down in the mid 1940s. At that time, this airport worked in collaboration with The Indian Airlines to operate flights to Mumbai and Chennai. The aircrafts that were used at that time were Fokker F27, Douglas Dc3, and Avro 748.
Later on, the airport also started its operations at Cochin and Bengaluru. The airport staff started working in a full-fledged terminal in 1970s, when the new terminal was built. However, a need was felt to elongate the runway in order to accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircrafts. Hence, in the beginning of 1980s, the airport was closed for the expansion of the runway, and it was made up to 3,000 meter long (from the previous 2,600 metres). The airport hence resumed its services in 1987. The most primitive partner of the airport, the Indian Airlines, started to operate for the international destinations such as Sharjah, Colombo, and Singapore.
The airport currently has two terminals; one of them is under construction and one is already complete. The airport has its personal fire station, and the parking bays of the airport have an accommodative capacity of handling 6 aircrafts at a time. The under construction terminal has started its operations for passengers, while the old terminal is being used for all sorts of cargo operations. The new terminal offers state-of-the art facilities to the passengers, which include an accommodating capacity of 350 passengers for arrival and departure each, four lifts, four escalators, two aerobridges, a taxi track runway, new fire station, new workshop, and a totally air conditioned environment. With this, it is also expected that the cargo handling will increase from 40 tonnes to almost its double within a matter of a few months.
The expansion project of the airport resulted in increasing the area of the airport from 5,962 m2 to 14,673 m2. The new terminal offers very separate halls for domestic and international passengers, and there are separate VIP rooms available at the airport, along with customs office, duty free shops, and banks.
