Vadodara Airport BDQ

Vadodara Airport, also named as The Civil Airport Harni, with the international code of BDQ (IATA, ICAO: VABO), is a civilian airport located on the north eastern side of the state of Vadodara, Gujrat, India, in the commune of Harni. It is located on the southeast of Ahmadabad, approximately 139 km from the state capital of Gandhinagar.

Vadodara Airport is located at a distance of 8 km from the city center and Vadodara Railway station in Gujarat. Its geographical coordinates are: latitude 22° 19'46" N and Longitude 73° 13'10" E. This airport covers an area of 256.4484 Hectares and its elevation is 127 ft. Other airports in the vicinity are Ahmedabad Airport (120 km).

Vadodara Airport, formally named after the city Baroda (now Vadodara), has connectivity with the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Banglore, Ahmedabad and Chennai, handling daily flights to these destinations.

Vadodara Airport has been a domestic airport but will become an international airport once the planned new terminal that is under construction is declared operational. The existing domestic terminal at Vadodara Airport is different from other airports due to its combination of Gujrati and architectural designs inclusive of domed roofs.

To improve the services of the airport and also to initiate the international services, it was decided to build a new Integrated Terminal Building. After an international architectural design competition, a US- based consortium Genseler, Federic Schwartz Architects and Creative Group from India were contracted to design the new terminal.

The foundation for the new terminal was laid on the 26th of February 2009. As expected, the project was completed by the end of the year 2010. The terminal has an area of 18,120 sq. meters with the enhanced ability to cater to as many as 700 passengers, 500 of domestic passengers and 200 of international passengers per hour. It has 18 check-in counters. The building is equipped with escalators; it houses 7.30 lakh passengers annually. The oval shaped building is made of glass and steel. The apron services have been extended for the parking of 07 category ‘C’ type of aircrafts. The terminal also houses x-ray scanners for baggage, immigrations counters, custom counters, security check booths and conveyor Belt/arrival. The airport does not handle cargo currently; the plan for this facility is also under process. According to the Airports Authority of India, the construction of a Technical block cum control tower is under process at Vadodara airport.

The structure of the new terminal of the Airport allows the passenger and baggage circulation organization, so that the domestic and international passengers do not mingle up at any point on the airside of the building.

The organization of the terminal is straightforward and efficient. The planning is sequential with all the terminal functions supported by clear way finding[Y1]. There is a definite division between airside and landside spaces; the terminal is visibly connected around the central zone[Y2].

The Indian Air force Squadron ‘The Rhino Squadron’, which is inclusive of transport aircrafts, has its permanent base at Vadodara Airport, having its own state of the art MRO facility for HS 748 and AN 32 aircrafts.

Vadodara airport caters to airlines such as Kingfisher Air, Indigo, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Multiple Airlines and Jet (India). Popular destinations of Katra, Edmonton, Surat, Delhi and Bhuj are frequented by these airlines.
